Distinguishing Features of the Plant Fagus sylvatica is a large, deciduous tree growing up to 35m, with thick, cylindrical, smooth, gray trunk and oval, wavy, green leaves. The flowering lasts from April to May and the fruiting happens in October.

Pharmacological Effects - Therapeutic Applications The herbal infusion is used as tonic, antiseptic, antacid, antipyretic, antitussive, expectorant and bacteriostatic. It is recommended for the treatment of chronic bronchitis. Also, it is applied externally to the skin against various skin diseases. It is administered in the form of gargle, which offer immediate relief from severe toothache. Apart from its pharmacological properties, the plant is also used in lumber industry (trunk) as well as a fuel, in the form of coal. In pharmacy, the plant is also known as 'Creosote', due to the contained active ingredients (Creosotum)
Method of Administration It is administered as expectorant and antiseptic in the form of infusion (two drops of the herbal extract in a cup of boiling water, twice a day) and in the form of tablets (especially in homeopathy)
