Distinguishing Features of the Plant Frankenia hirsuta is a perennial herbaceous plant growing up to 0,1m, with very small, linear, fleshy, dark green leaves and small, white or pink flowers. The stem is fluffy, having a characteristic red color. The flowering and the harvesting take place from February to April.

Pharmacological Effects - Therapeutic Applications The whole plant has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and it is recommended as an astringent for the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, leucorrhoea, gonorrhea and runny nose. The herbal extract is used in cosmetics due to its astringent action for cleansing the skin, as well as an emolient and analgesic against skin irritation.
Method of Administration The plant is administered either orally or it is applied externally to the skin as an astringent in the form of herbal tea (a spoon of dried herb in a cup of boiled water, preparation time 5 to 25min, 2-3 times a day). This herbal tea can also be used in the form of gargling for its astringent action to the upper respiratory tract.
