Distinguishing Features of the Plant Ballota acetabulosa is a perennial, herbaceous plant growing from 20 to 60cm, with heart-shaped, pubescent leaves and red or purple, pubescent flowers. The flowering and the harvesting take place from June to August.

Pharmacological Effects - Therapeutic Applications The whole plant has antimicrobial, stimulant, spasmolytic, sudorific, diuretic and expectorant properties. It is administered in the form of infusion for the treatment of kidney stones, gout, diabetes, depression, anxiety and hysteria. In folk medicine it is applied externally in the form of poultice against burns and skin wounds. Finally, in homeopathy it is recommended in the form of tincture against cough, insomnia and the disorders of the nervous system.
Method of Administration The plant is administered as diuretic, antidiabetic and depressant in the form of infusion (15g of dried herb in 500mL of boiling water, 2-3 times a day) and juice. In homeopathy it is administered against cough and insomnia in the form of tincture (25-40 drops, 3 times a day). In folk medicine is recommended as soothing and healing in the form of poultice (external use).
