Distinguishing Features of the Plant Iris unguicularis is a perennial, herbaceous plant growing up to 40cm, with thin, lanceolate leaves and small, blue or violet flowers with white or yellow spots. The flowering and the harvesting take place from January to March.

Pharmacological Effects - Therapeutic Applications The root's extract has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antitumor properties. Also, it is recommended against the postmenopausal symptoms, as well to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and strokes, due to its high content of flavonoids. Finally, it is administered in the form of poultice against headaches and in the form of freckle removal cream.
Method of Administration From the plant are isolated the kaempherol and the hispidulin, which are orally administered as antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Also, it is used in cosmetics as an ingredient in creams and ointments.
