Distinguishing Features of the Plant Sisymbrium officinale is an annual, herbaceous plant growing from 25 to 60cm, with pinnate, wavy, lobed leaves and small, yellow flowers. The flowering lasts from May to September and the harvesting takes place from March to May.

Pharmacological Effects - Therapeutic Applications The whole plant has astringent, antibacterial, expectorant, diuretic, digestive and laxative properties. It is administered in the form of infusion as cardiotonic, due to fruits' high content in cardenolides. Also, it is recommended for the treatment of hoarseness, sore throat and mucus secretions.
Method of Administration The plant is administered against hoarseness, sore throats, and as expectorant in the form of herbal tea (a spoon of dried herb in half cup of boiled water, one or two cups daily).
