Distinguishing Features of the Plant Satureja hortensis is an annual herbaceous plant growing from 15 to 30cm, with lanceolate or linear leaves and violet or white flowers with green or purple spots. The flowering lasts from June to September and the harvesting takes place from July to August.

Pharmacological Effects - Therapeutic Applications The whole plant is used as digestive, expectorant, antidiarrheal, antiseptic, tonic of the nervous system and aphrodisiac. Also, it is administered in the form of herbal tea for the treatment of various gastrointestinal problems, colic, flatulence, gastroenteritis, dyspepsia, nausea and diarrhea. It is recommended against bronchitis, sore throat and menstrual disorders. Studies are conducted for the possible use of the aqueous extract for its anti-HIV-1 action. Finally, it is applied externally in the form of poultice against insect bites and arthritis.
Method of Administration The plant is administered as expectorant, antiseptic and gastric in the form of herbal tea (a quantity of dried herb, 2-3 times a day). It is applied externally to the skin in the form of poultice made from the fresh plant.
