Distinguishing Features of the Plant Ruta graveolens is a perennial, herbaceous plant growing from 40 to 60cm, with composite, oval, blue-green leaves, oval fruits and small, yellow flowers. The flowering lasts from June to July and the harvesting takes place from March to August

Pharmacological Effects - Therapeutic Applications The whole plant has antispasmodic, emmenagogue and antitussive properties. It is administered in the form of infusion and herbal tea in order to regulate the menstrual cycle, to cause relaxation of smooth muscle, especially those of digestive system (against colic), as well against spasmodic cough. This herbal tea is also recommended for the treatment of hypertension, as it improves peripheral blood flow and reduces blood pressure. The leaves are used to relieve the headaches, the palpitations and the anxiety. Finally, in homeopathy the essential oil is used against rheumatism, neuralgia and menorrhagia, while in folk medicine the infusion made from the leaves is administered to expel gas from the stomach as well as diaphoretic.
Method of Administration The plant is administered as antispasmodic and emmenagogue in the form of infusion (1-2 spoons of dried leaves in a cup of boiling water, three times a day) and herbal tea (a spoon of the dried herb in a cup of boiled water, take it cold, twice a day, on an empty stomach)

Toxicity- Adverse Effects The whole plant has possibly mutagenic properties. Plant's consumption may cause photosensitivity. Overdose occurs gastric pain, vomiting, systemic complications and central nervous system complications (hallucinogenic action).
